How did you get interested in Balto?

We're all here for one main reason, right? Because we love the movie Balto. But I was wondering, what got you started on liking it? Did you hear about it from friends or just see it advertised and decided to check it out? Was it because it was based on a true story, or do you just like dogs? What's the reason you started to like it?

The White Wolf

There are many speculations about who the White Wolf really is. Some think that it's Aniu from the second movie and some think it is just a mysterious White Wolf that comes at the right place and the right time, to help Balto accept his wolf heritage.

Personally, I have always thought of the White Wolf being just that, a wolf. And a male wolf at that. Yeah, I know that the animators were different for Balto and Balto II, but you would think that they would at least make an attempt to make ...

DVD Game

I'm sure most of us have the DVD version of Wolf Quest, right? (Actually, I think we all would have to... I'm not even sure if it's on VHS. XD) How many have actually played the game from time to time?

I think I've played it once. It's pretty cute the first time you play it, and very easy. Basically - for those that haven't played it - you have five rows of three blocks with one correct block in each row. If you get it wrong, a clip of Balto slidding down the iceburg (or something like that... ...

Many people say how they would have done Wings of Change differently than it was. So what exactly would you have changed in it?

Personally, I thought the dog-sledding was much to "Balto" for me. I really enjoyed Wolf Quest partly because of the fact that it didn't involve dog sledding like Wings of Change did. Don't get me wrong, I still liked it, but Wings of Change I think would have been even better if it had had a different focus.

In my opinion, I just really didn't like ...

Which Balto movie was YOUR favorite? And why?

Mine was the first Balto movie, for they did the best job on that.. and I just loved it. Balto II and III weren't all that good. Crappy animation, and odd storylines. Although I must admit I dislike Balto III more than any of them.

As for me, I only have the second and third movie on DVD and the first one on VHS. I almost got the first one on DVD, but some mean old lady bought it. =\

I also have a toy type thing. LOL !! I can't even remember where I got it. But I've had it litterally as long as I can remember. Which is a long time. XDD !!

Now here is what I hope will be a fun and enjoyable topic!

While there are certain characters, in the three Balto cartoon movies, which were designed for comic relief (Muk, Luk, Star, Sumac, Yak, Mel and Dipsy), several of the remaining characters had moments where they could be rather funny, even comical (intentionally). And I think the writers incorporated that in order to make the stories more generally enjoyable.

And yet, for all the comic relief and the occasional funny ...

Out of all three movies, which one had your favorite trio and why were they your favorite?

Of cource, I enjoyed the original one the best. They were "THE" trio. The other ones I hardly considered a trio. In Wolf Quest it was three wolves that basically seemed dumber than all get out and in Wings of Change the three were so underdeveloped and you knew nothing about them that you could hardly even start to really enjoy the characters. But that's just my oppinion.

Through my time of being a Balto fan, I've noticed a lot of people who have adored Balto II, and those who have hated it with a fire burning passion of one thousand suns... What made Balto II so great or so awful to you?

Personally, I really liked Balto II. It was by far not as good as the original, but it was good nonetheless. I really did like it. The whole native american spiritual thing was right up my alley. Granted, the animation was second rate, and it could have been done better... ...

Most Inspirational Part

For the most part, Balto is full of different inspiraional parts. What was the most inspirational part to you?

Mine is mostly a mixture of the scene where Balto falls down the cliff trying to save the medicine and finally accepts his inner wolf. I'm not sure why I like it so much. It must be because of the message itself and the music. Something that usually is able to get to me. haha.

The other part is deffinatly at the end when Balto finally brings the team into Nome again. It kinda ...

Well, just like the title, do you think Wings of Change would have made a better 2nd sequel than Wolf Quest?

I personally do.

Wings of Change followed Balto 1's sledding story line, WQ's spiritual stuff was a bit random and seemed totally weird next to the original Balto with the only part of that seeming to be spiritual would be the White wolf scene at the bottom of the mountain.

I think that they still could have fitted Aleu's wolf rebellion in WoC but kept more to the sledding too ...

If you Could Have Changed One Thing...

... what would you have changed? This can be for any of the movies from Balto to Wings of Change. It could be as much or as little as you want, too. ;D

For me.. I would have changed a few things around in Wings of Change for sure. For one, I would have kept Stella, but she wouldn't have had such a big part, she wouldn't have been such a slut-y goose, and she wouldn't have had a song.

I would have had Kodi in it more, too. The movie barely seemed to get into his character at all and ...

White wolf / Aniu: Native american legend

I thought this might be something interesting for BT.

Quite a long while ago now while talking with Shaun Ellis I mentioned Balto and the White Wolf and he told me of an actual Native American legend regarding a white wolf.

It is said that when you are great need a white wolf will appear to guide you and offer help.

In Balto 1 the White Wolf appeared to Balto after he gave up at the bottom of the mountain. I personally think that wolf was a spirit...remember when Balto howled? ...

Serum Run dogs who were stuffed and mounted

There has already been some discussion, on various Balto movie fan forums, about how Balto (the real one) and Togo, following their deaths, were mounted and put on display. I see that people have divided opinions on this. Of course, no matter what your personal beliefs regarding taxidermy (stuffing and mounting a dead animal), people were still very much in love with the serum run heroes even when they died and, right or wrong, they wanted some way to keep their memory alive in a very tangible ...

Anniversary of the Serum Run

Folks,

I hope we haven't forgotten that today, January 27th, is the anniversary of the very first of a series of events which culminated in the arrival of Gunnar Kaasen's team in Nome, at 5:30 A.M., on February 2nd, 1925. The team, led by Balto, was carrying the 20-pound package of diphtheria anti-toxin ampules...which had passed from driver-to-driver (changing hands 20 times).

Okay...today, I'm going to attempt to give you all some introductions, inasmuch as is possible from the historical record, of some of the OTHER dogs who did their part during the 1925 Nome Serum Run. These dogs have been pretty much forgotten by history, having been utterly blotted out under the shadows of Togo and especially of Balto.

The dogs, of course, would never have felt one was more deserving than another. Each did his or her part as assigned...whether as a lead dog, wheel dog, ...

Have you all seen ? I am pretty sure you all noticed for the most part. We have a new 1925 Serum Run History section, which talks about the whole reason for the movie Balto to come out !! And then we have out Films boards, which, now like Balto Source, we have three boards for the movies. I had to do this in order to make it seem more... worth being there.

Alot of people here on BaltoSource don't exactly agree on Balto's colour - Black and White. Well, I decided to show people he WAS Black, and not brown. Baldy of Nome

Baldy of Nome was a famous sled dog who, with his owner Alec "Scotty" Allan, won the All Alaska Sweepstakes in 1908. Although he is no Balto, he is still an important figure in Alaska history.

The implausibillity of the cartoon Balto

There are so many people who really believe that the dog seen in the cartoon movies Balto, Balto 2: Wolf Quest, and Balto 3: Wings of Change is an accurate representation of the real Balto. That the real Balto was not a black & white Siberian husky, but rather a brown-gray wolf dog hybrid. Often, they see black & white pictures of Togo, and think HE is Balto, and that the cartoons are accurate for that reason.

This is only what I think and came up with logicaly. The animation in Wolf Quest was so faulty, though, that we'll of cource never know where Aleu really lead the clan.
